The orange is the winter fruit that we all know, due to the large amount of vitamin C it contains. Its origin is now confirmed to be in China and it seems that it was imported into Europe only in the fourteenth century by Portuguese sailors, but some ancient Romans already speak of it in the first century; it was grown in Sicily and they called it melarancia, which could mean that the fruit had reached Europe by land. Both theories may be correct. Probably the orange really arrived in Europe via the silk road, but the cultivation took place only in the warm Sicily.
