Copaiba is an imposing tree that can reach a height of 35 meters. It grows in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, in Colombia, Peru and Venezuela. The copaiba tree produces an oily resin called "balm of the Amazon", from which the essential oil is extracted.
ThereCopaifera officinalisis an evergreen tree native to Central and South America, it blooms best in the habitats of humid tropical forests but also grows in forests where the climate is drier. Resin (oleoresin) is extracted by draining from the bark of these trees, similar to extracting maple sap. It is obtained by engraving the bark, a process that does not damage the tree, collecting the resin. This juice is carefully steam distilled, obtaining the essential oil of copaiba.
For centuries, South Americans have used Copaiba resin to ensure the health of the respiratory, digestive, urinary, cardiovascular, and immune systems. It was considered "the oil of life", due to its extraordinary therapeutic properties.

dōTERRAhas put Copaiba essential oil on the market since 2018. As we said, the raw material is extracted from plants in the Amazon rainforest, which being largely impractical thanks to its dense vegetation, forces the collectors to make the movements_cc781905-5cde -3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_ trips by river with boats.

For this reason, the harvest is carried out in a very specific period in which the plants can be reached in order to extract the resin from the trunk, ie between January and June, when the waters allow it.

To extract the resin from Copaiba plantsdōTERRAemploys local skilled labor in this process. In order to ensure that the extraction takes place without damaging an ecologically sensitive system in the region and therefore without permanently damaging the trees themselves, dōTERRA does not purchase the oil-resin from merchants who speculate without scruples, but cooperates exclusively and directly with the growers. premises that collect the oil-resin with wisdom and techniques handed down for generations, however regularly verifying their work.

The resin is extracted by making a hole in the trunk, then when it begins to pour, it is slowly collected with special procedures. Then the hole is closed with wood and after six months from that same point it will be possible to collect again about a liter of resin, avoiding damaging the plant. From this resin, through a steam distillation process, the essential oil with a woody and spicy scent will be extracted.
