Oregano is a plant 30-40 centimeters tall, with a woody, climbing stem, and small, oval leaves, while the flowers are pink. The incredibly beautiful flowers gave the name to the oregano plant, which derives from the Greek "oros gamos", or "splendid mountain", referring to the beauty of the oregano flowers that covered the mountains and hills in the areas of Mediterranean.

Oregano has always been used for therapeutic and gastronomic purposes and was also used by some animals to treat certain ailments. Deer apparently eat oregano leaves to treat infections caused by insect bites or thorns.

The essential oil of oregano vulgaris is also suitable for children (always after consulting the pediatrician). The most important properties are the following:

  • Anti-infective: in the oil there are phenols, molecules able to counteract various types of infections, resulting very powerful and with a wide spectrum of action. One of the molecules present is carvacrol (with a concentration ranging from 50-76%) a phenol capable of eliminating germs by destroying their cell membrane. A carvacrol agonist is γ-terpinene which, even if concentrated at 3-20%, contributes to the germicidal action;

  • Antibacterial,   pesticide: carvacrol has bactericidal action against many bacteria, including: E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus epidermidis. There is only one germ that has been shown to be resistant to carvacrol: Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Carvacrol is also effective against viruses and parasites;

  • Antifungal: carvacrol also fights infections by fungi, including Candida albicans, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Aspergillus niger, and against dermatophytes;

  • Tonic: γ-terpinene stimulates good mood and contributes to maintaining a good general state of health.
