The essential oil of Ylang Ylang or Cananga odorata is an evergreen tree up to 15 meters high, native to Indonesia, also widespread in Australia and part of Asia. It has an erect, very branched stem which gives rise to a well-balanced crown. The leaves are large, dark green, glossy, lanceolate and with wavy margins; on the underside they are slightly pubescent. In spring and autumn it produces numerous flowers at the leaf axil, solitary or gathered in small clusters; they have 3-5 elongated, pendulous, greenish-yellow petals resembling a 5-pointed star, which turn intense yellow when they reach maturity.

The name ylang-ylang of Tagalog origin, means flower of flowers, or from ilang-ilan, that is "uncommon", referable to the very particular aroma. The women of those places used to dissolve a few drops in coconut oil to protect their skin and hair during the rainy season. Already the French colonists called it "aphrodisiac perfume", because it was used in harems together with other essential oils.
